Happy Holidays!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I will be posting a detailed rehearsal schedule within the next few days, so please keep checking the blog.

Please continue to look at the choreography videos. David said that this is not the exact choreography, but is designed to give you a good idea of what the choreography will be like.

Everyone is called for music rehearsal on Monday, Jan 2. I realize some of you may still be out of town. But, if you are in town, please be at reahearsal.

By now, eveyone should have been able to drop by the studio to pick up scripts.

Originally I requested that character backgrounds had to be turned in on the 2nd. I'm pushing that date back because I realized that some of you don't even know who your character is, whether you are a who or a jungle creature or a circus performer. So, I will be letting you all know your specific roles on Jan 2 so that you can start developing your character background. For those of you with more than one part in the show, you will need to do more than one character background. But, all of you should have already started thinking about your characters for Seussical.

For those of you who have never worked with me before and are new to character backgrounds, let me explain what I'm looking for and why it's very important.

I expect you all to be off book by Jan 30, or at least be pretty close. Memorizing your lines is extremely important, especially when you are dealing with seuss and lines have to rhyme and have a certain poetic rythm. I don't want paraphrasing. But, I have seen shows where actors said all their lines perfectly, and the show was still awful because they didn't understand their character. So, their lines were shallow and had no emotion. Also, if all you do is memorize lines, when something goes wrong, you won't know how to cover it. But, if you know your character in depth, then hopefully you can react to any situation the way your character would. The goal is to have such a deep understnading of your character that your character becomes as real of a person as your are. That way, your character determines for themself how they walk, how they talk, how they act and react to what's going on around them, rather than you imposing those things on your character. This way, you can become your character rather than just play your character. To this end, I want you to think about your character. Start with the basics and go from there. What is your character? What is your character's full name? Where did they come from? How old are they? Do they have a family? Then move on to deeper questions. What does your character enjoy doing for fun? What makes your character sad? What is your character afraid of? Feel free to also add in fun little facts. What is your characters favorite cartoon? What is your characters favorite breakfast cereal? I know some of these things may seem insignificant. But the goal is for you to begin thinking of your character as a real person that lives and breathes and eats Lucky Charms, rather than just a fictional character on a page. The better you know your character, the deeper your character is, the more likely you are to draw the audience into the magic that we are trying to create on stage. I want the audience to feel like they have been transported to the Jungle of Nool. For a brief moment, I want them to forget that they are in Houston TX watching a show. Both Roger and I will be happy to help you develop your character. Feel free to ask questions. I want you to explore and stretch your imagination. Both kids and adults, be creative. Don't hold back. I'm excited to see what all of you come up with. This should be enough information for all of you to get started. I look forward to working with all of you. We have an amazing cast, and I hope that this is an incredible experience for everyone.

One more quick note. Next week, I will be building set during the day every day. I would greatly appreciate anyone that could help at all. There is lots of fun stuff to do. I need people who can cut and build things out of wood. I need people who can cut foam. And, I need people that can paint. So, if you are available during the day next week, I could really use your help. Thanks.

Hold on to your hats and get ready to have some fun. You have my guarantee that I will give my all to this show and do everything I can to make it a fun, positive, learning experience.

I look forward to seeing you all on Jan 2nd. I am honored and excited to be your director.
